An Example of Overused Rapport Building in TV Shows

I recently read a book on social engineering by Christopher Hadnagy. He lists very useful and effective techniques to improve your social skills. Anyway, after reading for a while I unfortunately noticed that some of those techniques are used heavily. If you know them, they look really unnatural.

In this post I’ll show you the head tilt. Tilting the head to one side gives a more trustworthy look to you. The effect’s origin comes from showing your carotid artery to your opponent to indicate that you are no harm to him. After I saw two really bad performances, I felt the urge to post this.

First example is from the show Fringe. They use this expression with people called the Observers. Second example is from a new show called Touch, featuring Kiefer Sutherland. In the second episode of the show, a character who has lost his father shows the same expression. I’m sure, you may find many other examples yourselves.
